Lawrence Wilke’s interest in musical instruments began when he started playing cello at 8 years old. He began his studies with Marijane Carr Seigal of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, who also taught his uncle violin maker David Caron. He completed his cello studies from 1981-84 with Dr. William Klenz of SUNY Binghamton. 

In 1978 at the age of 16 he began his apprenticeship in Dallas, TX with his uncle, master violin maker David Caron. During this time he also studied bow making and repair with Philip Krause. In 1986 he completed his studies when he went to work for Andrew Dipper in Taynton England where he studied design and restoration. In 1988 he opened his own studio making violins, violas, but specializing in cello making.

Since 2007, I have dedicated myself to the craft and tradition of stringed instruments, focusing on both their creation and restoration. In 2011 I joined the esteemed Givens Violins workshop in Minneapolis, where I had the opportunity to work and collaborate with some of the most respected artisans and restorers in the field.

Starting in 2016, I worked with renowned violin maker David Folland, where i gained valuable experience in high-level violin making. His precision and craftsmanship helped shape the foundation of my own approach.

In 2018, I became part of the Robertson and Son’s Violin Shop in Albuquerque, assuming the dual roles of maker and restorer. This experience allowed me to work closely with talented musicians and to care for and restore some truly priceless instruments.

In 2023, I established my own workshop in southeastern Minnesota, primarily focusing on crafting new instruments. While I continue to undertake repairs, its on a part time basis

Mike started his violin-making career as a wood carver. Throughout the early ’70’s he was a professional bass player. As a favor to professional musician Pat Sweeny, Mike made his first violin. 

For 35 years Mike Sheriff has handcrafted bows and violins which are popular by the local Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony players.

Mike studied bowmaking with William Salchow, Lynn Hanning and George Rubino who are respected authorities in traditional French bow making. Mike studied traditional Italian violin making with Howard Hichcock, who is a graduate of the Cremona violin making school in Italy. Mike has also studied violin making with Peter Horn, a graduate of the Mittenwald School. Mike continues to study and collaborate with Paul Schuback who is the current, and first american, president of the International Society of Violin and Bow-Makers. Few craftsmen have had the unique opportunity to study both French bow making and Italian, French and German violin making.
